NUTRIENT MIXING GUIDE
Pre-Mixing Nutrient Concentrates at Home
To reduce waste and shipping costs, your Salad Tree dry nutrient kits are designed for easy at-home mixing. Each kit contains three separate components—Part A, Part B, and Part C —which must be mixed into a liquid concentrate individually in separate containers before use.
What You’ll Need
Starter Pack (Quart-Size Jars):
-
3 × clean quart-size mason jars (1 L each) or pickle Jars or whatever you have at home
-
Warm water
-
One Salad Tree starter nutrient kit (lettuce or tomato formula)
- A precise measuring cup in ml or kitchen scale
Big Pack (Gallon Jugs):
-
3 × clean gallon jugs (4 L each) – repurposed milk jugs, vinegar jugs, or laundry detergent bottles work well (sanitize first!)
-
Warm water
-
One Salad Tree Big Refill Pack
- A precise measuring cup in ml or kitchen scale
🥄 Mixing Instructions
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Never mix all three components into one container. Keep them separate to avoid nutrient lockout or precipitation.
Step 1: Clean & Label Your Containers
-
Wash and rinse jars or jugs thoroughly.
-
Label each one:
-
"Part A – Base Nutrient"
-
"Part B – Calcium Nitrate"
-
"Part C - Magnesium Sulfate"
-
Step 2: Add Warm Water
Starter pack:
- Add 635 ml / g each for Part A and C
- add 685 ml / g for Part B
Big pack:
- add 2.6 litres (2600 grams) of warmer water in container A and C
- add 2.8 litres (2800 grams) of warmer water in container B
Step 3: Add Nutrient Powder
-
Pour the full contents of each respective nutrient packet into the corresponding container:
-
Part A → Base Nutrient
-
Part B → Calcium Nitrate
-
Part C → Magnesium Sulfate
- You can remove the labels from the packages and stick them onto your jars
-

-
Step 4: Stir or Shake to Dissolve
-
Close each container tightly.
-
Shake or stir until all solids are completely dissolved.
If your nutrients are not dissolving properly, you can heat up the water more. Just pour the contents of the jar into a saucepan, gently heat it on our stovetop and stir it until it is fully dissolved. Do not boil. Pour it back into the jar.
If that doesn't help, you can double the amount of water and split it up between 2 containers. Then follow the final mixing instructions for the 'lighter concentrate' in our mixing guide.
If you have different sizes of containers:
Please refer to our Nutrient Mixing Guide for the correct ratio.
Storage Tips
-
Store in a cool, dark place.
-
Shake well before each use.
-
Do not mix concentrates together until diluted in water for your grow tower reservoir.
💧 Using the Concentrates
When topping up your tower's reservoir, refer to our nutrient mixing guide to determine the exact mL to use from each part.
Pre-mixing in a 5 gallon bucket or jug is recommended, so that you can get the correct ratio before pouring it into your reservoir. We like to keep a 5 gallon water jug around for this purpose, as it is easily available and the perfect size for refilling a tower reservoir.
-
Use equal parts of each concentrate
- If the weather is very hot, you can add more water
FAQs
Can I order Salad Tree towers and parts from anywhere in Canada / internationally?
Yes — we ship throughout Canada and internationally.
What are shipping times and costs?
We strive to dispatch orders within 1-3 business days. Shipping cost depends on your location and weight of the order. We offer free shipping over $200
Do you offer gift cards, promo codes, or referral discounts?
Absolutely. You can apply promo codes, gift cards, or referral codes at checkout. Only one promo code or gift card can be used per order.
What comes in the box when I buy a Salad Tree tower?
Each tower includes:
- The aeroponic tower structure with net pots
- Reservoir with pump and timer
- Light kit (if part of the model)
- Rockwool cubes
- Seedling Tray
- PH test Strips
- Instruction manual / quick start guide
How long does it take to set up? Do I need any tools?
Setup takes about 20–30 minutes. No special tools required. A small screw driver is included to secure the base. It’s plug-and-play.
Where can I place my tower?
Anywhere with access to a standard power outlet. You can use it indoors (basement, kitchen, side room, with the light kit) or outdoors seasonally (balconies, patios, gardens, greenhouse). Just make sure it’s protected from extreme temperature and direct harsh weather when outside. If it is exposed to wind, we recommend securing the top of the tower so it cannot blow over in a sharp gust.
How often do I water the tower?
Our closed-loop reservoir recirculates water. You’ll need to top it up with fresh water and nutrients about once a week, if it is very hot, possibly twice (depending on your plant load, ambient heat and humidity).
Do I need to measure pH levels or buy fancy water?
Tap water works well. You will need to balance the PH so that your plants can thrive and optimally absorb nutrients. Just follow the instructions for additives/nutrients, and occasionally refresh or clean the system.
What kind of growing medium do you use?
We use rockwool cubes that provide moisture and aeration to roots. They are pH neutral and work well in aeroponic systems.
Is it safe for kids and pets?
Yes. The system is soil-free, clean, and low-risk. For curious pets, avoid letting them drink from the reservoir. If kids are involved, this is a great hands-on educational experience.
What happens if there’s a power outage or the pump fails?
Without power, the pump won’t run, so plan to manually care for plants (watering by pouring nutrients in the top, or temporarily placing the net pots into trays with nutrient solution if the outage is extended.
We have replacement pumps in stock in case yours breaks. Generic submersible aquarium pumps will also work just fine.
What types of plants can I grow in a Salad Tree system?
You can grow leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, kale, etc.), herbs (basil, cilantro, mint, etc.), flowers, vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc.), and even small fruits (e.g. strawberries) depending on your setup.
Do seeds come included? Can I grow my own varieties?
We don’t currently sell seeds - you may find seeds at a gardening supply, local seed exchanges, and online seed companies such as West Coast Seeds, https://www.damseeds.com
How long until harvest?
You can expect initial harvests in about 4-5 weeks from seeding or transplanting for leafy greens. Fruit-bearing or flowering plants may take longer.
What kind of warranty do you offer on towers & components?
We offer a warranty on defects in workmanship or materials for all original tower components. If parts break or fail under normal use, we will replace them within 1 year of purchase.
Can I return my tower if I change my mind?
Yes, we have a 30 day return policy. Items must be unused, in original packaging. Buyer covers return shipping unless there was an error. There is a 10% restocking fee.
What support do you provide?
We have support available via email or online chat. Please note that we are a small team so responses may not always be instantaneous, but we will get back to you as soon as we are able.
We provide set-up guides, care-tips, growing advice, and troubleshooting on our website.
